Titans Sign Woodyard to Two Year Extension
While the Titans may have missed on one particular former free agent linebacker (Dont’a Hightower chose to re-sign with the New England Patriots), they were able to agree to terms with one of their own.
The Titans signed veteran linebacker Wesley Woodyard to a two-year contract extension yesterday, keeping him on the roster through the 2019 season. The deal is a two-year extension, worth $10.5 million. This year, he will receive $2.2 million, as well as a $1 million roster bonus.
I think that this was a very solid move for the Titans. Woodyard is coming off of a strong 2016 campaign (57 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception, and 5 passes defensed). From a financial standpoint, this move makes sense for the Titans as well. I feel like they would rather pay to keep someone the coaching staff is familiar with, than bring in and possibly overpay for another player. I fully expect that Woodyard will continue to be one of the team’s primary leaders on defense in 2017.
